Why you can’t (and shouldn’t try to) resize your tungsten carbide ring

Why you can’t (and shouldn’t try to) resize your tungsten carbide ring

There’s a lot to love about tungsten carbide rings; they’re incredibly durable, scratch-resistant, and affordable compared with other metals.

However, the extreme hardness of tungsten carbide makes it difficult to resize or alter the ring once it's been made. This means choosing the right size from the start is crucial.

What is tungsten carbide?

Tungsten carbide (chemical formula: WC) is a metal alloy composed of tungsten and carbon. It's renowned for its hardness, durability, and resistance to scratches and corrosion - making it an increasingly popular choice for rings.

The hardness of tungsten carbide rings makes them highly resistant to damage, increasing their longevity. Unlike precious metals like silver and gold, tungsten carbide is hypoallergenic, making it suitable for sensitive skin.

Why can’t tungsten rings be resized?

Tungsten carbide's extreme hardness is the primary reason it's difficult to resize. This hardness makes the metal brittle and resistant to manipulation. Any attempt to cut, bend, or stretch the metal will likely result in the ring breaking or shattering.

What can I do if my tungsten carbide ring doesn't fit?

If your ring doesn't fit, your best option is to exchange it for a size that does.

If this isn’t an option, you could try using a ring resizer. Ring resizers are small bands that can be worn under the ring to help secure it on your finger. They come in various styles and materials (commonly silicone) and can be a temporary solution to improve the fit.

You should avoid using ring resizing gels or liquids as these could damage the ring and will likely void your warranty.

Choosing the right size ring

Ultimately the best way to ensure your tungsten ring fits is to take the time to measure your finger properly. Here’s how:

  • Get a professional measurement: For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional jeweler.
  • Use a ring sizer: If you prefer to measure at home, you can use a ring sizer.
  • Avoid using measuring tapes: Do not use tape measures or string, as they can lead to inaccurate measurements.

Tungsten ring alternatives (that can be resized)

For a ring that offers more flexibility in terms of resizing, you may wish to consider the following options:

Titanium: Lightweight, hypoallergenic, and extremely durable. It's a great choice for an active lifestyle and can be resized.

Stainless steel: A budget-friendly and durable option that's easy to resize. It's hypoallergenic and comes in a variety of styles, making it a popular choice.

Gold and platinum: Classic and luxurious metals that can be easily resized. They offer a timeless look and feel but are more expensive than the other options.
